HOCKEY TRAINING

 

 

Our gym structure is based on supervised training with coordinated check points and constant monitoring. Each athlete, player and goalie have unique needs and thus we treat, coach and consult each person individually. Training options are by group, or on a monthly basis. With some minor exceptions the gym space is available with assisted training daily.

ASSESS & TEST

Sport will create imbalances and it is an athlete’s responsibility to understand the physiological effects. Identifying such risk factors is essential to keeping athlete’s healthy.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

Complete Athletics uses a combination of:

  • Combine Testing Comparisons

  • Muscle Testing (overhead squat, rotational core stability, shoulder mobility, etc.)

  • Static postural analysis

  • Biometric measures (heart rate)

  • Anthropometrical measures (mass, height, body composition)

  • Flexibility (sit and reach test, shoulder mobility)

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness

  • Muscle endurance (ensure proper muscle activation, address muscle inhibition)

ATHLETIC THERAPY ASSESSMENT

Assessing these patterns and appropriately addressing them will contribute better training, performance and overall injury prevention.

PROGRAM CREATION

Each custom program is a labour intensive process taking into account the following variables prior to even putting pen to paper

  • Building postural cues into each movement/exercise to correct imbalances

  • Taking into account, on-ice activity and season demands

  • Balancing each athlete's requirements and tailoring to their playing style

  • Periodizing training given the focus

  • Monitoring work load and dictating appropriate volume (total work output) to minimize injuries

 

Summer programming also includes:
 

  • Adjustments and monitoring given the athlete's performance and/or feedback

  • Testing and re-assessing

  • Ties in athletic therapy and physio therapy to ensure balance and a proactive approach towards injury

Our program offers all athletes the opportunity to have a coach help assist with their progress. Training is supervised to ensure safety and to help athletes execute movements correctly. Athletes have open access to any coach and can ask questions, demonstrations, technical break-down etc. 

 

When technique breaks down, injuries are more likely to occur. The end goal is high performance BUT to also keep our athletes off of the sidelines from an injury. This requires supervised training.

Tony's off season maintenance is seamlessly integrated into your program to ensure impingements are prevented and corrected, range of motion and functional movement are maintained while enduring your summer training program.

Tony and his staff will be present weekly in the gym and by appointment for specific treatment.

 

MONTHLY PROGRAM COMPONENTS

VIDEO REVIEW

Athlete’s need to train. That is obvious. What is not so obvious, is, not all training is in a gym, on the ice, on the track, or the pitch. One of the most important and often overlooked tools, is the usage of video analysis. While common in a collegiate or professional environment, it is often simply lacking or not used at minor level. At Complete Athletics, we offer video analysis in select Athlete Monitoring programs. 

 

Video is used to study technique and it ensures, not only performance and safety, but helps with the mental aspect of training. Visualization is a proven tool for success and helps our athletes see inefficiencies that are not immediately obvious.  

ASSISTED TRAINING

HILL TRAINING

Before we had prowlers, sleds and other performance training tools for speed and power, hill work was the go to tool for athletes. Hill training not only increases overall strength and conditioning, but forces athletes to be moving with force and teaches to push off on the balls of the foot. 

 

The strength improvements are obvious but even more important, it is the neuromuscular and CNS (Central Nervous System) training that is involved. Simply put, hill work can strengthen the communication between your brain and your muscles. We all want to be, ‘explosive’, and a large part of this, is forging strong ties between mind and body. 

Program Adjustments

Seldom is progress linear in an athlete’s career. It would be convenient if so, but what I more likely, is the need for constant fine tuning. Injuries, growth spurts, mobility impingement's for example, are all variables that will change. As such, coach’s meet with athletes bi weekly to ensure they’re on track. 

 

Adjustments will be made to the following areas: mobility, posture, strength, conditioning, body composition, and any applicable areas.Program feedback and coaching is crucial, expect all base programs to be modified regularly.

 

Private Sessions

Select Athlete Monitoring programs will provide athletes with bi-weekly private review sessions. The purpose of the review sessions are for coach’s to check in with athletes and discuss not only their physical progress, but anything that may detract from performance. 

Secondary, is, coach’s will require feedback to make adjustments to programming. We encourage communication and this forces all of our athletes to focus and self-reflect. Two pre-requisites for athletic success.
