of GOALIES PLAYING PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY HAVE HAD SURGERY TO  REPAIR hip, groin, or abdominal issues!

"Powered by the formidable muscles, the aspherical ball atop the femur is jammed into the cup of his hip joint with force akin to an Olympic weightlifter performing a clean and jerk, this according to research by McGill University and hockey equipment maker Bauer. As a goalie flares his toes to wall off the bottom of the goal, the ball rotates inward, scraping away at the cartilage that pads the interior of the cup. Multiply that by 500 repetitions a day -- estimated executions in practice -- and you start to feel sorry for the cartilage."

OUR GOAL

we DEVELOP
a customized
Preventative
strategy
  1. myofascial release
  2. mobilization/stabilization
  3. activation
  4. strengthen
  5. stretch

Our goalie specific off ice training targets the most unique position on ice. This position demands athleticism, core stability, and explosive bursts wrapped in a mobile body that is governed by pin point accuracy and control. Given the uniqueness of the position, a Complete Athletic's goalie's training vastly differs from a player’s program.

Consider the demands of the typical goalie:
Shuffles, t-push, butterfly, butterfly recoveries, predominantly lateral movement, power slides, each arm is locked in a specific position (trapper and blocker). Not only are these unique to a goalie but they are REPETITIVE. Its this repetitive nature that causes imbalances and muscle inhibition. Therefore, each goalie's Strength & Conditioning plan must take into account typical impingements caused by these repetitive movements.

Crucial to maximizing performance and injury prevention, is the repair and pre-component in each goalie's off ice program. Each training session will have a portion dedicated to help restore balance and prepare the body prior to exercise. Key concepts are tissue quality, lengthening muscles and the activation of crucial muscles such as the gluteals. Meeting the prerequisites is key to ensuring a long playing career as well as unlocking hidden potential.

Train for TECHNIQUE and develop POWER:
Developing bursts of power requires drilling technique. We make reps count versus, ‘Counting reps’. Principles such as plyometrics and modified Olympic Weightlifting movements are used to help develop power. This is made possible off-ice by ensuring specific technique is perfected before we introduce load. Not only are Complete Athletic's goalies expected to be powerful, but they’re expected to be in correct positioning and aware of ‘how’ they’re moving as they arrive at their final location. A player for example, has the luxury of using their arms when striding hard. A goalie’s arms are often positioned counter to natural movements. Training needs to reflect this.

Goalie Specific Training programs consider the following:

  • Prep the body via education FIRST

  • Distinguish the unique movements of a goalie vs. a player

  • Consider these unique movements when training to avoid further imbalances and prevent injuries

  • Given the repetitive nature of the goalie position – ask yourself: ‘Are my off-ice exercises correcting these on ice movements or are they exasperating the damage?

  • How do I restore balance and make effective use of off-ice training?

  • Train with a focus on position, correct posture and make each rep count

Trainer Mike Ho from complete athletics has had a tremendous impact on my athletic ability, strength and mentally. He puts a lot of time and effort into helping my off ice development. Creating a warm up tailored to my body for before off ice and on ice training. This warm up includes foam rolling and stretches to prevent any injuries. Also, when we are in the gym we work on areas that I need to improve upon. In addition to this we will work on certain areas that will improve my on ice play as well. Furthermore Mike is always pushing me to my fullest potential, knowing what I am capable of and pushing to that limit, because of this I have seen great results in my strength and mobility. Finally, Mike has not only helped my mobility, strength and confidence but he has also been a great role model and friend that I always enjoy training with.

"CGD and Complete Athletics have been an excellent set up for me during my summers in Ottawa. I can train in a great gym and then get on the ice right away. The rink is perfectly sized for goalie drills, allowing me to work on my system. Most importantly, Charlie, Paul, Mike and the rest of the staff are there every step of the way. Their support is encouraging and helps me strive to be better each day. I recommend CGD and CA to any goalie looking to improve their game in a fun and professional atmosphere."
